Email Client
The desktop software that you use to compose new mail and view the mail you receive, its features can help you organise contacts, filter through spam, etc.
- Mozilla Thunderbird: standalone email client from mozilla.org, includes good spam filtering
- Mozilla: the main browser also has an email reader component (with the same spam filtering capabilities as above)
- Novell Evolution: similar to Outlook but without the viruses! (Linux and Solaris only at present)
- Outlook: should be avoided if possible, it suffers very similar flaws to IE: it seems designed to be exploited and catch viruses, see our exploits section for examples
Then you must also configure it securely!
Other Email utilities
- Tightening Outlook: if you really have to use Outlook, at least try to make it a bit more secure
- Procmail Security: the E-mail Sanitizer, also has good information on email threats
- Secure Email: how to use secure sockets to make insecure email protocols encrypted
